- Marketing Assistant Position:
- Platypus Media, an independent publisher producing books for families, teachers and parenting professionals, is looking for a marketing assistant for our office. We are a small, busy office located in a Capitol Hill townhouse (with cats). We are looking for someone who can help coordinate marketing activities for our existing and new children's and adult books.
- Candidate must:
- Have project management skills: ability to manage multiple project plans with minimal staff support.
- Have extensive written and oral communication skills, excellent telephone personality.
- Have excellent administrative and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Be flexible and eager to handle a range of tasks.
- Be a multi-tasking, self-starter, accustomed to working with little supervision.
- Have strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, database software).
- Candidate will be responsible for:
- Writing newsletter articles, catalog copy and press releases.
- Coordinating school and library visits and arranging for event publicity.
- Distributor relations - regular contact with all distributors and upkeep of distributor lists.
- Trade show promotion and staffing, as needed.
- Support launch of new titles including developing/writing news releases and other collateral, disseminating information to media.
- Develop, coordinate, implement production and distribution of marketing communication material including advertising, direct mailing, sales flyers, etc.
- Maintaining list of book awards and submitting materials in a timely manner.
- Researching media sources; maintaining media contacts and key contacts files.
- Updating and maintaining files of book reviews, articles, awards and appearances.
- Updating and maintaining list of trade shows and conferences.
- Acquiring mailing lists and maintaining master lists of customer, reviewers, etc.
- Preparation of marketing proposals and quotations.
- Coordinating mailings and doing follow up.
- Position could be full-time or part-time (20-30 hours/week, minimum 4 days/week, during office hours). Can work around school schedules. Office is Metro accessible and has cats.

- Office Manager Position:

We are a small, busy office located in a Capitol Hill townhouse (with cats). We are looking for seek someone who can help us be more organized, operate better, AND HELP US GROW.
- Candidate must:
- Have supervisory experience and a broad range of office skills.
- Possess proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, and database experience; Quickbooks/Pro experience a plus.
- Have excellent people and telephone skills.
- Have administrative and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Be flexible and eager to handle a range of tasks.
- Be a self-starter, accustomed to working with little supervision.
- Candidate will be responsible for:
- Supervising staff of one, plus intern(s)and/or part-time freelancers, and keeping everyone in the loop.
- Streamlining systems, response time to calls and emails, and keeping projects moving in the office.
- Handling basis day-to-day office issues to provide owner more time to focus on development, sales, and editorial work.
- Customer service, order fulfillment, and invoicing.
- Maintaining accounts receivable and inventory.
- General office duties, ordering supplies, etc.
- Position could be full-time or part-time (25-30 hours/week, minimum 4 days/week, during office hours). Can work around school schedules. Office is Metro accessible and has cats.

- Internship Opportunities:
- Assist in all aspects of a small, independently-owned publishing house based in Washington, DC, including work in editorial, marketing and administration. Duties include reading and critiquing manuscripts, contacting libraries, editing materials, supporting the launch of new titles, assisting with arranging author appearances and events, supporting trade show endeavors, maintaining various media, customer and other lists, researching new sales and media outlets, preparing invoices, processing payments, packaging orders, maintaining computers and helping support the work of the office. We are able to use just 2 to 3 interns each semester and in the summer. These positons fill up fast; if you are interested, apply as early as possible.
- Interns are expected to work 12 to 20 hours per week with a minimum 3-month commitment. We will consider all majors. We are Metro accessible. This is an unpaid internship; transportation expenses are negotiable. An internship with Platypus Media offers an excellent introduction to the world of book publishing. The office is in the basement of the owner’s home, which is also home to three cats.
